Dario El-Amin

As my nickname here suggests, I'm a rogue deep in my heart, therefore every upcoming green card piques my interest. Sadly, so far Dario El-Amin only brought me disappointment. Breakdown goes like this:

  • to gain his bonus, you have to pay 4 upfront, spend an action and fill your ally slot AND sit on 10 resources. Now, one might say that in rogue class, having 10 resources is a cakewalk, with all those Hot Streaks and Lone Wolves, right? Well, in theory, yes. In practice though, you really need to be able to spend them to either gain more actions or pump your stats during skill checks - you need the cash flow, not the trust fund. What Dario does effectively need you to do then, is to treat 10 as your new 0. One might still think that's easy, since
  • you can use Dario as an action, to get 2 resources every round. Without him, one action can give you only one resource, so doubling that looks like a value proposition... Untill you realize that to get it, you have to: spend 4 resources, an action, fill your ally slot and spend another action... It's just too much and one might call it "slow"... It's a snail move. Rogues ain't no snails, we wanna go fast. Which brings us to the elephant in the room. Or, err, lion. Lion in the room.
  • Since the Dawn of Core Set, rogues have access to arguably the strongest ally in the game, namely Leo De Luca. Played early in the game it's a gift that keeps on giving, everyone loves him and we know that for some time now. Sadly, every green ally printed since then is always going to be compared to him, and so far none have proven to be worthy. In my games in last few weeks, every time I had Dario in play, I wished he was Leo instead. Which is really depressing, because
  • Dario's bonus is excellent when it's there. My old man was looking forward to boost his that was kicking him down all the way through Dunwich, and even Sefina thought she might be able to reach mystic-like state, but to no avail. On that note, Sefina is probably most likely to effectively use Dario's bonus stats, because she can paint herself a juicy hot streak of Hot Streaks. That one additional is also very nice, even if not as substantial. But that's the problem with Dario in general: he seems nice. He wants you to think that he is this friendly companion, but can he take a hit for you, with his 2 health/2 sanity? He offers exotic boost of two stats, but in that regard his business proposition is merely a distorted and mutilated echo of what Peter Sylvestre has brought to the table.

By now I hope I've proven that Dario is not good enough to be the new number one ally in rogue decks, but can he be number 2? I wish I could tell you that he's good enough to warrant taking Charisma for him, but that'd be very optimistic on my behalf, and I have Hospital Debts to worry about, so optimism is not really my thing. I do, however, hope that his time will come at some point, only on the basis of his promise and flavor, even if those things were - so far - very deceptive.

Your analysis seems very solo play and skids centered. Thats hardly seems fair for a card that makes a nice fit in Jenny/Sefina decks. — aramhorror · 709
Your analysis of my analysis seems very assumption centered! I wouldn't really bother writing anything if I only played this card in one deck/investigator - so that assumption doesn't fit here. In Jenny's deck his requirement was hurting the cash flow same as in Skids, as for Sefina though... Willpower stat seems tempting, and as I already hinted, he was most consistent in her deck due to Painted World + Hot Streak combo. With that said, it was never as amazing as it would seem to be. Tempo loss is really not worth it, both in solo and group play. He's flavorful (especially if you're aiming for a thematic deck) but deceptive, because to have him in your deck is almost never as good as good ol' Leo, and believe me when I say that I came to that conclusion with great sadness - I had high expectations and I did my fair share of testing in last two weeks. With that said, I still want to try him in something more exotic, namely Rex with Milan and Charisma. Like I said, I do hope his time will come, for now though there are stil better options than him. — Skid_the_Drifter · 147
Having tried him in a Jenny/Lone Wolf/Charisma/Leo deck, I agree - it's difficult to keep above the 10 resources to keep the bonus active, and Leo knocks spots off him. I'm not abandoning the Jenny experiment yet - but he's definitely not a top flight ally like Milan, Peter or Leo — AndyB · 955
I added him to my sefina deck after i got 2x hot steak and hes absolutely crazy for her. With holy rosary and dario she has will 6, so her spells really rock. His action is also great to fuel Streetwise, if your out of lockpicks. With one charisma, she can have both leo and dario out (or use Calling in favors to get both out quicker). — Django · 5155
What about having him in a leo anderson deck? He's going to be one cheaper to get out and he can consistently provide resources, a problem that guardians seem to suffer from a lot. You're probably not going to be able to use his stat boosts, but his two health and two sanity will still be a good sponge. — majiming · 8
Quantum Flux

This is an absolute must have card for pretty much every investigator that can take it.

Not having to worry about running out of cards during The Dunwich Legacy is wonderful (Can't say any more than that to avoid spoilers). Potentially getting good one use cards like Astral Travel/Storm of Spirits/Hypnotic Gaze/Blinding Light back into your hand "quickly" is super-powerful. Combine this with Arcane Initiate & Scrying, and you can fairly quickly get those cards back.

I am not trilled by it that much, as I do exhaust my player's deck only very rarely (even in Dunwich so far). Though, IMO it is good that it has "?" for ability tests which would be — XehutL · 47
..more frequent use of it anyway. — XehutL · 47
I dont see much use for this card yet, except for countering the one Encounter Card. The normal cost for running out of cards is just one tiny little horror. I guess, it could be usefull in a solo deck that uses lots of cards and Alyssa Graham, and you use Alyssa to doom your weaknesses to the bottom of your deck. — aramhorror · 709
I don't know if I agree that it should be in every investigator's deck, I like it a lot as a one-of in Sefina though. That said this card is a lot like Levy AR Lab Access from Netrunner, and that card is restricted now, I think this card isn't as good as LARLA though just because Arkham's card pool has less good stuff to recur, and you rarely use your entire deck in this game, on top of that, when you run out of cards you just take a horror & reshuffle your discard pile into a new deck anyways, so you don't need this card to refresh your deck except for in Dunwich maybe. — N146 · 61
You should rather add horror healing than this card. — Django · 5155
If you are running a lot of fast cards and strong events this card is really good. I like it a lot in Sefina and Norman as a 1 or 2 of. — Myriad · 1226
I'm thinking about taking that card in a Rex deck with heavy card draw since it can dilluate the draw of his curse. — alogos · 1
David Renfield

I used this card in my Sefina Rousseau deck (i included mainly spell cards) yesterday and i think he's very strong for 3 reaons:

  1. Boosts , mystics main stat
  2. Damage soak. Only mystic ally with more than 1 HP.
  3. Provides ressources for mystics many expansive assets, like Shrivelling and Rite of Seeking.

Other advantages:

  • He's also pretty cheap at 1 ressource (including discount from his own ability).
  • Ability always succeedes, unlike Alchemical Transmutation and does not harm user, unlike Forbidden Knowledge
  • You MAY to add doom to him, when using his ability. You'll get less ressources, but decreases the risk of advancing the agenda
  • Can be killed by placing damage on him, if doom is an issue

Disadvantages

Django · 5155
I thought about getting him for solo Jim, so you think its viable? I might try him, as replacement for Lone Wolf and as a boost at the same time. But, that would mean to stick to 1 or 2 Charisma :-/ — XehutL · 47
This is a strong Card and adresses several mystic Problems (Ressources, stamina soak). You should Play him if you can compensate the Doom. Tell me more about your Deck, if you want more tips. — Django · 5155
Ambush

This card gets better, when you know the scenario and "ambush" fixed spawns (advancing act or agenda).

It doesn't matter which player stays behind. This allows the parties fighter to "protect" a clue gatherer, as long as the gatherer stays at same location.

Even if it does not trigger, it may safe a lot of time if the gatherer knows he is safe for 1-2 rounds while the fighter saves someone else or hunts specific enemy (Smite the Wicked).

It's very useful when there's lots of clues on one location, like in bigger parties (3-4 players) or special locations (The Hidden Chamber).

It also helps on higher difficulties, as the damage is an "auto success".

+3 in a Nathaniel deck. — MrGoldbee · 1489
Question on this with Zoey. Does Zoey get her resource from engaging before this card blows up a 1 or 2 hp enemy? — lockque · 1
Nope — MrGoldbee · 1489
Are we sure Zoey doesn’t get the resource? Does the enemy not spawn engaged? Related question: if a two health enemy with an engage effect (eg., Deep One) spawns in a location with Ambush, does the engage effect trigger before it dies? — carlsonjd11 · 521
Given comments on other cards relating to enemy spawns - Enemy spawns, automatically engages, engage effects are triggered (Deep one horror, Zoey gets resources), then enemy spawn effect are triggered, like this card. — Merzbro · 133
What about this card + On the Hunt (3)? If the enemy spawned with OtH is defeated by Ambush, I gain 3 resources? Thanks. — yuna1979 · 1 2 days ago — yuna1979 · 1
"Let me handle this!"

This card can be used on enemies and the other investigator does not have to be at your location.

This card is great to protect other (noncombat) players because it can be used on enemies and spawns them on the users location, instead. It also saves the user lots of move actions, if he's the main killer.

So long a player has this card, other players are basically immune to monsters. This allows noncombatants to split from the rest of the team and do some power clue gathering. But be aware, when there's 3 or more players, there's a chance all players draw an enemy.

This card does more than steal enemies. Another side benefit is that it can take nasty Willpower checks away from those who cannot afford to fail them. Also, if a card does physical damage to an investigator with low stamina, this is a way for a Guardian with decent stamina to soak that damage. It's also a 0XP card so any of the investigators who can splash 5 cards of other classes can take this. This card is almost a must-include in all Guardian decks and those who can splash it should consider it. — mmychal · 1
Question: In a 2 player game, player #1 draws their encounter card during the Mythos phase. Player #2 plays Let me handle this. They resolve the card. Player #2 then has to draw another encounter card, which is their "card for turn", right? — VanyelAshke · 181
I've been searching for an answer to this question and I cant find anything definitive, but I have convinced myself you are correct. The main reason why is because consider the scenario where the player turn order is switched from your example. If the Guardian player goes first, draws a card and deals with it, then nothing prevents him from playing Let Me Handle This when his partner draws an encounter card second. In that scenario, it seems clear that the Guardian player would have to resolve two encounter cards whereas the other player would get off without resolving any. I have seen all kinds of analysis comparing the language on this card to other cards and specific rulings, etc., but to me, the most convincing point is that the turn order of encounter cards should not dictate whether this card has the Guardian deal with two cards or one card. — OrWi11 · 1
I can certainly see where the case could be made for that interpretation, being able to see the encounter card then switch places in the sequence would be valuable, but I think it only really works if the 'considered to have drawn' only applies to resolving the card. I play "Let me handle this!" and the original drawer essentially adds the line 'Revelation - Pass this card to investigator X' to their encounter card. If it applied on a sequence level it would probably break a few things. Ie, If investigator 4 used "Let me handle this!" that way on the lead investigators encounter draw it would end the Mythos phase without anyone else drawing as they've drawn early and there is no next player in 'player order'. Either that or we restart player order and the lead investigator draws again. Even in the earlier cycles if that were the intent it would likely include a line specially detailing how the sequence was changed/interrupted. It's why cards like [First Watch](/card/06110) have very dense text boxes. — TenDM · 1
