First off, I'm very sorry about:

  • The horrid pun of words in the title
  • My deck-building abilities
  • My usual rant about skill cards
  • The work in progress this deck still is: I'm testing it over Carcosa, and there are some cards I'm still not sure about

Okaaaaaay, so I'm not going to start again and tell you how I love investigators. I've only published 3 decks to date (this one included) and they're all . I've played other classes successfully, but not as successfully as .

If you want to read why I think they're the best investigators go either to my Marie Lambeau or Agnes Baker decks. I don't think have the best card pool right now, but as the game's growing, they will become the unbeatable overpowered class, mark my word.

The investigator

Akachi is good value. Any investigator that starts with a 5 in the ability she will primarly use (talking about here) is good value from the start, whatever her unique ability or other stats might be.

Now, look at that ability. It's basically static resource acceleration. This is a card game relying on resources and card draw, and you have the resources problem solved, especially if you take ability into account.

Getting extra use of your Spells as a . Enough said don't you think?

My ever reliance on skill cards

I love skill cards, and can't seem to build without at least 8-10 of them. The game is full of skill tests you want to pass if you want to win. Skill cards helps you do that and add beneficial effects to the mix. So, I just like those cards from the Core Set, which can later be replaced by something more powerful.

Simple how to play

Akachi is straight forward. Find Spell cards, play them, use them. The Arcane Initiate should help you do that. Then, roll on, you should be fine if you mulligan for:

Upgrades

No need for Book of Shadows, Recharge, that's already an accomplishment.

I generally find any Shrivelling or Shrivelling (3) better than Song of the Dead and Shrivelling (5).

  • Song of the Dead: unreliable to get the extra damage outside of a Jim's deck maybe
  • Shrivelling (5): okay, so first off Shrivelling is already good, especially Akachi's extra charge. Shrivelling (3) is uber-good. But I don't like Shrivelling (5). Most of the enemies have 4 hit points the extra damage provided is not that useful, and then +2 horror is really awful.

Why not using Forbidden Knowledge?

4 horrors for 4 resources and 1 action to play the cards? Hell, no. Just play Uncage the Soul as action compression + resources. That event also has 2 icons, if (unlile in my current Carcosa campaign) you did not get Indebted as your basic weakness and have enough resources.

Why no David Renfield?

I included it at first, so I guess it'd be ok. The Arcane Initiate can be sacrificed to whatever monster after you grabbed all the Spells you could. Plus, the Holy Rosary already gives you the static boost of +1 without eating the Ally slot and helping the Mythos crush you.

Why no Torrent of Power?

Because the downside of Akachi is here signature weakness. Angered Spirits can be a real pain when it comes out. And if you just dumped all your extra charges in a big Torrent of Power you might end with a physical trauma.

Seems like a straightforward deck. I think you make a good point of sticking with Shriveling(3). I know Astral Travel and Ritual Candles aren't particularly popular. What has your experience with them been?

Astral Travel is one of those cards I'm unsure about. I'm currently running a Carcosa campaign, just starting the 4th scenario, and yeah, I've never actually used the spell. So I'll certainly cut it for an updated card sooner or later.

Right off the bat, I generally find Ritual Candles to be an (cheap and less effective) equivalent of Dark Horse. Let me explain. Ritual Candles gets you +1 on roughly fifth to a third of the Chaos Bag, so at best, it's +0.2 to +0.33 to all your stats, for 1 resource, which is not bad.

Also, I don't think there's much level-0 cards to fill in your hands slots to begin with. One could argue there for a Knife but the deck isn't really lacking in combat tricks.

Eventually, the Ritual Candles are the only contender for the second hand slot, and I tend to find better than any other class just because they are the only class capable of using easily all their slots.

However, though I think it's an underrated card, it certainly isn't top-tier, that's why I recommend swapping them as soon as possible with the Spirit Athame, since you're usually performing Spell tests anyway.

Will use this deck with Yorick in Carcosa, but I switched Astral travel and Alchemical transmutation for Drawn to the Flame..

Hey! Let me know how it goes! I think swapping Astral Travel for Drawn to the Flame is good. I found Alchemical transmutation to be some kind of mitigation to Akachi's weakness but not a big deal if you take it out. Besides, I add "Indebted" as a permanent weakness and needed the resource generation.

Two more changes - 2x holy rosary out / 2x st. Hubert key in :)

After the first scenario I've sacrificed Ritual candles in behalf of Time warp

I'm not a fan of St. Hubert's Key for Akachi, especially over the Holy Rosary. The Rosary gives you a static +1 and +2 sanity for 2 resources. The Key gives you +1 and -2 sanity for 4 resources. So maybe you're going to heal 2 horrors, but as you can soak 2 less... that's still not a net gain over the Rosary. Finally, that +1 is not game changing considering Akachi will probably still rely on Drawn to the Flame or Rite of Seeking to find those clues. St. Hubert's Key is way better on Marie Lambeau or Daisy Walker, maybe even on Jim Culver.
