Ive started this deck within our multiplayer group and wanted to give it a try to preston , 1 in each stat is a bad position to start with and spending money every turn via street Wise can Indeed compensate this but is not that effective to be on par with other characters .

But after all shitty stats is no longer a problem if you are not willing to succeed skillchecks .

And so i gathered useful cards to do clue gathering and evade without caring about the tests .

The clue Tools : "Look what I found!" Intel Report Flashlight

The evade Tools : Stray Cat+A Chance Encounter Decoy Cunning Distraction

The panic button "You handle this one!" Money Talks Lucky! Well Connected

The card draw/ressource engine : Family Inheritance Investments Drawing Thin Take Heart Rabbit's Foot

Two Drawing Thin+Rabbit's Foot+Take Heart exchange a failed investigation into 5 cards and 2 ressource or 6 ressources 3 cards .

With that amount of draw and ressource im able to reshuffle my deck and getting access to all those events to get clues and so on …

Xp :

and if you have more xp i ll go with another Charisma and 2 Lola Santiago.

Hope you'll enjoy living the life of a spoiled brat :)

Might be worth looking into Lantern instead of Flashlight. It can kill a weak enemy in a pinch and it's -1 shroud works perfectly with Skeleton Key. Plus it makes Lola's ability cheaper so you can keep yourself stocked for Well Connected and Money Talks.

Actually disregard the part about Lola. Still, Lantern seems like a good fit.

@StyxTBeuford the point of flashlight is to bring locations with 2 shroud to 0 in order to gather clues whatever chaos token you draw you ll get a score of 0 and so get a clue , the skeleton key is in fact combo with red gloved man cause it doesnt work with lantern or flashlight cause the shroud is set and cant be changed further .

I get the use of Lantern to Knock off a one life enemy but this is a multiplayer deck and i dont need to do damage .

Oh yes you are correct, disregard everything I said then, I misunderstood how Skeleton Key worked.

I feel like the track shoes would be really good for this build. You get a free skill test after moving that you can purposefully fail and trigger you card & resource combo. That lets you save your actions for something more important.

Also, I'd drop investments which looks really slow to me.

I play almost the same deck and agree the proper way to play Preston is to just use guaranteed effects.

In my build I didn't go for the stray cats / chance encounter but I think that is a nice way to guarantee evades in the early campaign.

If you are using Look What I Found then Winging It may be worthwhile to bring shroud 3 to 2 especially if you are playing on hard or expert.

I think investments is not necessary. It will also be very slow to get the money and slow to use both actions to bank the money. Its only decent if you are really scared of Lodge Debts but I have never found it a problem to pay them off.

I also cannot exagerate how amazing Lola Santiago is in Preston. You can delay her but her effect per XP spent exceeds anything else available to Preston. I think you should buy two copies with your first 6 xp.

Have fun!

I recently played Preston in a two-player Return to Dunwich campaign and it was quite fun. I would recommend a few updates to your deck list based on our experience:

  • Well Connected: I would recommend running 2x of this. Getting one into play ASAP is incredibly helpful and getting both into play is doubly so. In the mid- and late-game this is the best protection you have against the encounter deck, and with 2x in play you can use one of these for a mythos skill check and another for an evade, investigate, etc. check during your turn.
  • Investments: I would recommend removing both of these cards. Preston's innate economy is very fast and Drawing Thin only makes it faster. This card is just too slow (1 action to play + 1 action to harvest + 1 resoure to play + at least seven turns to make the card worthwhile).
  • I found running Cherished Keepsake and Leather Coat to be incredibly helpful. As you said, playing Preston means you're expecting to fail skill checks regularly. These items make Preston significantly more resilient to damage/horror effects from the encounter deck. I think your long-term plan is to have The Red-Gloved Man be your damage and horror soak, which I did not try, so I'm curious to see how this works for you. I think it's an interesting idea. :-) In the meantime, having something around to soak damage/horror will likely be helpful.

@everyoneknowsitswendy well connected is one per investigator , i agree that Investments are slow but it can with time skyrocket our ressource pool , i could consider leather coat for sur but cherished keepsake is competing with rabbit foot and im not willing to pay 3 xp for relic hunter.

I actually really like Investments for Preston since it says the resources go straight to the resource pool, as opposed to "gain a resource". This means he doesn't have to pull the trigger on Family Inheritance every turn to get them back, as he would with, say, Lone Wolf. So I imagine you just pull the trigger on FI when you do Drawing Thin + Take Heart that round.

@Susu: Ah crud... I completely missed that even though it's completely obvious. Oops!
