Core strategy

This is another attempt at using The Red Clock + Eldritch Sophist combo.

The idea is to have The Red Clock tick to only one charge, then move this charge with Eldritch Sophist to either Archaic Glyphs or Blur, effectively getting +3 skill value for one test every turn while also providing an endless supply of charges on our spells.

The +3 skill value is relevant not only for Archaic Glyphs but also Blur: evading with a base skill of 6 is comfortable enough to pass the test but not comfortable enough to succeed by 2 and proc Lucius's ability.

Once setup, this means to we are able to face both situations at the beginning of the investigation phase:

  • An enemy is engaged with us? Evade him, get a free clue and free action.
  • No enemies around? Sweep the clues using the Glyphs.

Living without the combo

Like any combo deck, it will take some time to get all the pieces out so it is important that the deck works even before assembling the combo. What the combo provides is 1) infinite charges 2) +3 skill value once per turn.

1) Both spells start with 3 charges so they can do some work before running out.

2) Skill cards Eureka! (+1 /), Quick-Witted (+1 to 3 /) and Survey the Area (+5 / +4) will provide the skill boost in the meantime. Also Thorough Inquiry can be committed for the icons.

Card draw & ressources

Card draw is covered by Scroll of Secrets (which can get additional secrets from Eldritch Sophist), Thorough Inquiry, "Where's the party?", Easy Mark and Eureka!.

Ressources are covered by Easy Mark only, which should be sufficient as the most expensive cards in the deck (Eldritch Sophist, Forensic Kit and Scientific Studies Grant) are not prority plays. All other cards cost 2 ressources or less.

Survivability

Lucius's biggest weakness being horror management, with have Eldritch Sophist to soak and Forensic Kit to heal.

Scroll of Secrets is also indirectly horror protection as it as a good chance of discarding Dreams of the Flood.

Otherwise it's just "You handle this one!" to avoid a nasty treachery testing .

Additional thoughts

Scientific Studies Grant is here to be able to hold 4 hand assets including 2 Magnifying Glasses.

Studious is here for the increased consistency and to get the deck to 29 xp.

Quick-Witted may be a controversial choice as I have seen that the general sentiment on this card is meh, but I do believe it has its place in this deck. We are not trying to cycle through the deck due to the horror penalty and the fact that it would put Dreams of the Flood (previously discarded with Scroll of Secrets) back in it. Instead, we are happy to see Quick-Witted over and over again as the +2/3 skill value it provides translates into action compression when committed to our spells, which happen to have infinite charges.
