First attempt at a customized deck for Roland Banks. Mostly similar to the starter deck, with an extra Dr. Milan Christopher, Vicious Blow, Beat Cop. Also two Perception were included.

Pretty good starter deck. Some friendly suggestions:

  1. I wouldn't bother with Milan Christopher (not 2 copies anyway). He's an amazing ally but not really meant for Roland. Many times you'll find it difficult to play him because of the high resource cost and you'll usually gather clues by other means than investigating. I'd add a 2nd Evidence! or Working a Hunch instead of 1 copy of Milan.

  2. Medical Texts is a bit too risky (since you're only at a +1 for its test, so you either play some valuable Lore icons or risk further injuring yourself). Add a 2nd copy of First Aid instead (same effect but no test required).

P.S. read your session report on BGG :)

I read your post on bgg. Welcome! I agree with @mihnea13's points.

I know that some people enjoy discovering what cards work best and what cards don't on their own. However, if you like, here are some friendly suggestions below.

If you are limited to core cards and since you have 2 core sets, I would suggest having more "2-of" copies of cards. This will increase the reliability and consistency of your draws.

Machete is considered one of the best weapons in the game. It has unlimited uses and only takes up 1 hand slot.

Beat Cop (level2) works well and may be a high priority for your first upgrade with exp

Thanks @mihnea13 and @Cro! I am always open to suggestions, considering how new this all is to me.

@mihnea13 With regards to Milan Christopher, I definitely see what you're saying, because when I first made this deck I was thinking it would be super hard for Roland to get clues, but after playing, that is clearly not the case (I mean, I didn't even realize his special ability is literally to gain a clue just for doing what he does best! ha). I'll probably go down to at least one, if not none of those when I build a new deck. But Medical Texts is a for sure no-brainer in that I seem to always discard that one when given the directive, or just commit it to a skill check, so there definitely has to be a better option if that's all I've ended up using it for.

@CroI never thought about the 2 copies as a style of deck building in and of itself, but now that you've said that, I can totally see how a deck can become more reliable if you're cutting down the percentile of different cards. Particularly if they're just going to take up space, when a second copy of a valuable card would be more effective. Definitely didn't realize machete has a winning combo of unlimited use/1 resource cost, so I'm definitely gonna add that to the next Roland deck I create. There are still so many cards I have to familiarize myself with. I haven't even begun to think about leveling up in any responsible way, because it seems like such a daunting choice with so few XP gained at the end of a scenario. But considering how often I use the base Beat Cop, that seems like a good direction to head in when I start looking at that process. I finally just picked up a deluxe expansion (Path to Carcosa) and some Mythos packs, so that is certainly in my near future.

This game has been so fun to get to know and experience, can't wait to keep investigating.
