Key Concepts

This deck is centered around taking calculated risks. Calvin is the perfect character to capitalize on this. He is the only character that benefits off of trauma. Before we get into the details, there are 3 different resources that Calvin needs to manage well.

**The first resource is Trauma. Let's take a look at Calvin's weakness, Voice of the Messenger. Voice of the messenger is a weakness that sets a timer on Calvin. Calvin has 6 total health and 6 total sanity. This means that Calvin has 10 points of trauma that he can take before he reaches Death's Door. On average, you will be drawing Voice of the Messenger once each scenario. If you take 10 and subtract the total number of scenarios, that's the amount of times you can perish in the campaign. However, each time you take trauma, you get stronger. We will talk about this in details later.

**The second resource that Calvin needs to manage well is Health and Sanity. You want to drop each stat one at a time. This is super important. Each attack you take will power you up. Don't ask if you should take damage, instead ask when to take them. Other characters manage gold and card draw, Calvin manages health and sanity. Take damage when you are ready to receive it so you can power up stats that you need for the scenario.

**That brings us to the next resource, Soak. Allies, charms, and your signature card "Until the End of Time" can take damage for you. It is very important to take direct damage first and then distribute the rest of the damage to your other cards. With all your soak in play, you practically have a second life. This makes Calvin a powerhouse in the late game.

Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. Dying with Calvin is good. Taking damage with Calvin is great. Gaining trauma with Calvin is fantastic! However, too much these things will be your downfall.

This deck was built with ZERO combos intended. Every card is useful on its own. Yet, every card combos with each other. It is when and how you build these combos that makes this deck works. The most important card in this deck is Lucky!. This card makes your gamble safe and powerful. With this card, you can pass any test, take larger risks, and commit less cards to instant fails. You will save powerful tools and resources with this card in your hand.

Early Game

The beginning of the game is where you are the weakest. At 0 stats across the board, you may be thinking that it is impossible to pass any checks. This is why we will be looking for a few cards to help you with this.

The mulligan:

  1. Rise to the Occasion
  2. Trial by Fire
  3. Lucky!

Rise to the Occasion will give you the ability to perform any checks in the beginning of the game with a small success rate. It gives you a chance to try some tests. The tests becomes much safer when you have Lucky! in your hand. Trial by fire is a powerful card that allows you to spend a full turn investigating. As Calvin, you will spend most of your early turns moving and exploring.

Mid Game

Slow draw! You want to limit your draws so that you can prevent drawing your weakness. If you feel yourself needing resources, take damage so that you can be more powerful. Based on which soak you draw, you can start dropping your HP or Sanity down to 5 respectively. Use Resourceful to return Lucky! to your hand.

Mid game is where managing health and sanity becomes important. The faster you drop your health and sanity the faster you change from mid game to late game. The great thing about Calvin is that you can control when you enter these phases. This character thrives on proactive play.

Late Game

When you reach 5 points of damage in either health or sanity and 3 points of damage in the other, you have entered Late Game. Now you are on a timer. With Resourceful and Pocket Multi Tool you can pass most checks.

This is where you can take calculated risks in +1 or +2 checks with Lucky! in hand. Most likely you will not even need to use Lucky! and this makes you very efficient in clearing tasks without spending resources or cards! Lantern lowers shroud by 1 and that is enough to make most challenging tasks trivial to Calvin. Makeshift Trap allows you to pass evades and fights easily and help your team as well.

Lastly, it's time for the Kamikaze. "I'll see you in hell!" is a very powerful card that can help your team secure bonus victory points, necessary horde thinning kills, and more. This is not an every scenario card, there will be games where you become very powerful that this card is not even needed. There will be other games that this card will be necessary to give your team a chance at clearing the scenario. Use this card wisely!

Upgrading and Variations

First Upgrade:(4-5 skill points)
  1. Spirit of Humanity
  2. Cherished Keepsake
  3. Leather Coat
  4. If you have 5 skill points: Miss Doyle

Spirit of Humanity is a powerful enabler for managing your health and sanity pools. This card powers you up faster, add blesses, and can save you when necessary. You can even take 2 copies of this card to make it a more consistent draw!

However, I recommend taking the upgraded Cherished Keepsake and Leather Coat. Once you draw these cards, you can enter late game. At 4 points of soak, you can safely enter late game with either of these cards in play. You can't do so with Spirit of Humanity in play, it is still very risky.

Second Upgrade:(4-5 skill points)

  1. Spirit of Humanity
  2. Five of Pentacles
  3. Survival Instinct or a second copy of your charm/body

This solidifies your core character as a ramping support. With Five of Pentacles, you can have a character that has 6 of each stat across the board. This is INSANE. You can keep Calvin at 5 damage each to allow for direct damage defense in case you don't draw your signature card, Until the End of Time.

From here on out:

  1. Lucky!
  2. Rise to the Occasion

We will be looking at thresholds. Fire Axe can replace Lantern if your team is having trouble dealing with enemies. Déjà Vu can be added if you exiled many cards in your previous run. True Survivor will allow you to regain your powerful skills!

At 3 trauma each, you want add your second copy of Cherished Keepsake and Leather Coat if you haven't done so already. You also want to add Devil's Luck to the deck as well! You will start using Spirit of Humanity to heal to extend your lifespan and therefore Harmony Restored can help change the curses back to blesses! Charisma will help open another slot to increase your soak.

Strengths and Weaknesses

This deck is built around Standard difficulty. I will be updating the deck with v.3 for Hard+ difficulty.

Calvin's strengths with this deck is versatility. The ability to fill any role, do any checks, perform any actions really well. You can kill the monster that your combat teammate couldn't manage. You can take hits from monsters they couldn't. You can investigate using actions without needing assets. You can take actions that have a high probability of failing just because you have Lucky! in your hand, knowing that it would be amazing if you pass and you still pass if you fail.

Calvin has 2 main weaknesses, Direct Damage and his Early Game. Until you pull Until the End of Time, you are at high risk of dying due to direct damage. You will be very hurt and your soak can't prevent this. Calvin's early game is very weak. At 0 stats across the board, there is no chance to succeed any check. Luckily, you have cards to deal with this situation but it still doesn't make it a better situation to be in.
