Intro:

Hey, Jude. Take an old gun and make it better. Now available in bear form (Heavy Furs)!

I wanted to make a deck based around the Old Hunting Rifle. The outcome uses cards with the Upgrade trait, which, when themselves are upgraded, become fast and have some nice synergy with Act of Desperation.

The idea(s):

With a little XP, you can add some fast Upgrade trait cards to your deck, like Reliable and Custom Modifications, so that each time you discard your weapon, and get the Upgrades back with Well-Maintained, you can go ahead and attach upgrades to your weapon again, without wasting any actions. Note that Well-Maintained does not return itself, however.

For example, once it's jammed or empty, Act of Desperation will let you throw your Old Hunting Rifle away, as well as get your money back; during this process, Well-Maintained will trigger and give you your weapon and other upgrades back; so, if you think you are going to kill an enemy with this action, you can commit the gun to the test for the extra Strength icon, and Yorick's ability will let you replay the Old Hunting Rifle once the process ends. If you are not going to kill anyone, you can keep the gun and try and dodge the enemy using Tennessee Sour Mash, Stray Cat (or one of the other such cards in the deck) and re-equip the rifle later. Once the Old Hunting Rifle is re-equipped, you can add all the fast Upgrades to it again, which, like I mentioned, should be back in your hand thanks to Well-Maintained triggering previously. Furthermore, if you play Resourceful during the Act of Desperation Fight action, you can get the Act of Desperation card back afterwards, too. The Eucatastrophe is there for insurance, just so the cycle of death can repeat itself - well, a few times anyway! Huzzah!

Upgrades (very roughly):

Other thoughts:

Incidentally, I believe you can fire a Warning Shot from your jammed rifle, and Oops! also triggers when your gun jams.

Hope you enjoy! :)=

Hah, great title and theme! I expected to see Old Shotgun in here thanks to Bill's hijinks with said shotgun, but Old Hunting Rifle is nice too, and supporting it with Heavy Furs to prevent jams is great.

Curious, why the .32 Colt for backup weapon? Yorick's 4STR is very dodgy accuracy without boosts.

Also, have you considered Short Supply? It's practically made for Yorick!

Well, I can't take credit for the Old Furs. Another nice user pointed out that it would be better, instead of Leather Jacket. I believe they also made a nice deck with Old Hunting Rifle.

I picked .32 Colt for the wrong reason basically: that it featured in the artwork of 2 upgrade cards for the deck - for theme only! I did try and justify it by thinking about adding "Eat lead!" to the deck, and using its 6 shots to try and fish for a useful Eldritch token.

In the beginning I was thinking about Baseball Bat or .45 Thompson in its place. You could still sub it out for the upgraded version of Baseball Bat, which would have some interesting synergy, I think.

Do you have any suggestions?

Theme is a great reason to add cards! I didn't realize it was in other cards' artwork.

If sticking with Guns will do the trick for theme tho, I'd suggest the .18 Derringer:

  • Firearm, so unlike Baseball Bat or Machete, you get to use One In The Chamber, Warning Shot, and even Custom Modifications if you like
  • +2 to hit, the best Yorick can get off a gun at L0- even better than the .45- and bullets are refunded on a miss
  • Cheaper than the .45 at 3 cost, which still gives a hefty +3 when you AoD it
  • You can fish it out of your discard with Resourceful

Only 2 bullets may seem daunting, but you have that covered already with One In The Chamber, Act Of Desperation, and Yorick's inherent asset cycling.

One other problem here, though: You have literally nothing that gives you card draw. Prepared For The Worst will help you fish out the rifle, but otherwise there's nothing in your deck that will let you draw extra cards. For that, I'd say:

  • Swap 2xSteadfast & 2xOops! for 2xGlory & 2xTake Heart
  • Possibly swap Take The Initiative for Daring (hard call, TTI is a great card)
  • Possibly swap the Stray Cat for Mme. Lebranche
  • Upgrade something into Drawing Thin as soon as possible

Thanks for the good suggestions! Need to buy myself some more packs, it seems - as if I didn't already have enough!
